Guimaras Mangoes Achieve Global Recognition with Geographical Indication Status

Philippines first GI product gains protection, promoting local farmers and cultural heritage
GUIMARAS, PHILIPPINES—The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has announced the recognition of Guimaras mangoes as the first product in the Philippines to receive Geographical Indication (GI) status.

This designation aligns Guimaras mangoes with notable global products such as Cognac from France, Scotch whisky from Scotland, and Parmigiano Reggiano from Italy.

The GI recognition highlights the distinct qualities, reputation, and characteristics of Guimaras mangoes, which are celebrated for their exceptional sweetness, unique shape, and vibrant color.

These traits are attributed to the specific environmental conditions and traditional agricultural practices of Guimaras province.

This status was granted by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) to ensure that consumers receive assurances of authenticity and high quality while preventing unfair competition from imitation products.

The DTI emphasizes that the GI designation enhances the value and identity of Guimaras mangoes in both domestic and international markets.

This development is expected to not only uplift local farmers but also contribute to regional economic growth and the preservation of the Philippines' rich agricultural heritage.

To maximize the benefits of the GI status, the DTI is implementing a strategic plan that includes expanding market access for Guimaras mangoes while maintaining their authenticity.

Initiatives are also underway to promote the significance of the GI seal, which symbolizes quality, traceability, and cultural significance.

In addition, the DTI is focused on supporting local farmers by providing capacity-building programs, technical assistance, and guidance to comply with GI standards.

DTI Secretary Cristina A. Roque remarked on the importance of this recognition, stating it is a testament to the unparalleled quality and unique heritage of Guimaras mangoes.

The DTI is working closely with Guimaras farmers to promote and protect the GI distinction, supporting sustainable growth in local industries while providing consumers with the opportunity to enjoy authentic Guimaras mangoes.

The DTI, through IPOPHL, continues its collaboration with other government entities to bolster the protection and promotion of Philippine Geographical Indications, aiming to foster economic development and safeguard the country’s rich cultural and agricultural heritage.
