Seismic Activity and Health Alerts in the Philippines: Recent Earthquake and Glanders Outbreak

Seismic Activity and Health Alerts in the Philippines: Recent Earthquake and Glanders Outbreak

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake strikes Sarangani, while Siquijor reports cases of glanders, a rare zoonotic disease.
On Monday evening, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported a magnitude 5.0 earthquake shook Sarangani Island, specifically the municipality of Sarangani, at approximately 6:48 PM. The earthquake was recorded to have originated 91 kilometers south of the island and was categorized as having a tectonic origin.

Instrumental Intensity I was reported in the towns of Malungon and Alabel in Sarangani Province.

Phivolcs has indicated that while no significant damage is anticipated, aftershocks are possible.

In a separate health alert, Siquijor Province has confirmed six cases of glanders, a rare bacterial disease primarily affecting horses, donkeys, and mules, caused by the bacterium Burkholderia mallei.

The affected individuals are receiving medical attention, and health authorities have reported that they are experiencing symptoms such as fever, chest pains, pneumonia, and skin ulcers.

Siquijor Governor Jake Vincent Villa stated that the situation is being managed and emphasized that the island remains safe for residents and tourists.

Ongoing surveillance, medical assessments, and contact tracing are in place, executed in cooperation with the Negros Island Region One Health Task Force, which includes multiple government agencies.

In line with managing the glanders outbreak, healthcare workers have been deployed to various areas to ensure early detection, while tests on animals are being conducted by the Department of Agriculture and the Bureau of Animal Industry.

Health officials have advised individuals to practice caution, maintain proper hygiene when interacting with animals, and to avoid contact with sick animals or consuming animal products from these animals.

Infected individuals are encouraged to seek immediate consultation if they exhibit symptoms such as fever or cough.

In response to recent flooding in Maguindanao, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) has initiated relief operations for thousands of residents impacted by the disaster.

Following directives from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., PCSO mobilized their Authorized Agent Corporation to distribute food packs at evacuation centers in Datu Piang, Maguindanao del Sur, where close to 8,000 families have been reported affected.

Relief packages included essential supplies such as rice and potable water.

The area has been placed under a state of calamity due to severe flooding attributed to the Intertropical Convergence Zone, resulting in at least two fatalities.

Additionally, the cremated remains of four Filipino nationals who died in a recent earthquake in Myanmar have been repatriated to the Philippines.

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration confirmed that benefits for the deceased individuals have been processed.

The earthquake in Myanmar on March 28 resulted in significant casualties, among them the four Filipinos who were met with family upon their arrival at the airport.

Lastly, demolition operations in Tondo, Manila, have been temporarily halted due to inclement weather conditions.

A court official cited humanitarian considerations for the decision, as the local residents faced challenges in finding alternative housing.

The demolition delay is in accordance with legal requirements that necessitate the suspension of such activities during rainy conditions.

Residents have expressed a desire to see formal documentation regarding the demolition orders and satisfactory relocation arrangements.
