Philippine President Selects Next Chief of Police Amid Ongoing Discussions on Regional Cooperation

Interior Secretary Remulla announces President Marcos has chosen a successor for the Philippine National Police; this coincides with Marcos's diplomatic engagements during the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla announced that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has selected a successor for the Philippine National Police (PNP) chief position, anticipated to be announced within the next two weeks.

During a press briefing at Camp Karingal, Remulla noted the challenges in finding an appropriate candidate, emphasizing the significance of the role in maintaining peace and order in the Philippines.

He expressed trust in President Marcos’s decision-making capabilities regarding the appointment.

The PNP has been led by General Rommel Francisco Marbil, whose retirement was initially scheduled for February 7, but was extended for four months to maintain stability leading up to the 2025 midterm elections.

Under consideration for the role are several senior police officials, including PNP Deputy Chief for Administration PLtGen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Chief PMGen. Nicolas Torre III, Lt. Gen. Edgar Alan Okubo from the PNP Chief Directorial Staff, Lt. Gen. Bernard Banac of the Area Police Command Western Mindanao, and NCRPO Chief PMGen. Anthony Aberin.

In parallel to domestic concerns, President Marcos has been active on the international stage, engaging with leaders from Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand during the ASEAN Summit held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in defense, economics, and education with each of the neighboring countries, notably reflecting on the 70-year relationship between the Philippines and Laos, and expanding partnerships with Vietnam and Thailand in trade, agriculture, and the fight against transnational crime.

Additionally, President Marcos supported the ASEAN's collective decision not to retaliate against the United States' recent tariff measures, which he described as a unifying position that underscores ASEAN's commitment to diplomacy and a rules-based multilateral trading system.

At the summit, Marcos highlighted the urgent need for accessible financing for climate resilience initiatives, stressing that Southeast Asia is particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts.

He urged ASEAN partners to enhance climate finance in support of the region's ambitions to address environmental challenges.

Marcos also reaffirmed the Philippines' commitment to combatting human trafficking, underscoring the necessity of regional cooperation to tackle transnational crime effectively.
