Gilas Pilipinas Boys Secure Dominant Victory Over Thailand in FIBA U16 Asia Cup Qualifiers

Gilas Pilipinas Boys achieve a resounding win, defeating Thailand 87-42, marking their second consecutive victory in the FIBA U16 Asia Cup SEABA qualifiers.
In a commanding performance, the Gilas Pilipinas Boys triumphed over Thailand with a score of 87-42 in the FIBA U16 Asia Cup SEABA qualifiers held at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in San Fernando, Pampanga on May 25. The victory marked an impressive start for the Filipino squad, maintaining an undefeated record of 2-0 in the tournament.

Under the leadership of head coach LA Tenorio, the Gilas squad established an overwhelming lead from the outset, concluding the first quarter with a remarkable 31-1 lead.

The Filipino team showcased an effective offense coupled with a robust defense, which stifled the Thai players, preventing them from scoring for over nine minutes in the opening quarter.

Notably, the Filipinos’ aggressive pressure defense resulted in several turnovers for Thailand, hindering their ability to advance the ball past half court on multiple possessions.

Gab Delos Reyes emerged as a standout performer for Gilas, contributing significantly with 16 points and nine rebounds.

His frontcourt partner, Prince Carino, added 15 points and seven rebounds.

Other contributors included Evareign Cruz with 12 points and Nickson Cabanero with 10 points.

Travis Pascual, who had led the scoring in the previous game, delivered a well-rounded performance this time, registering six points, nine rebounds, and seven assists.

In contrast, Thailand struggled to establish an offensive rhythm, failing to place any player in double figures.

Ananda Jaeger was the highest scorer for Thailand, finishing the game with eight points.

Gilas Pilipinas Boys are scheduled to face Singapore on May 26, with the latter having previously lost to Vietnam in their opening match, finishing with a score of 83-89. Meanwhile, Indonesia has also secured a 2-0 record, defeating Malaysia 67-45 in another match within the qualifiers.
