DILG Seeks ICC Approval for Duterte's Mayoral Oath amid Ongoing Legal Challenges

Former President Rodrigo Duterte is recognized as the mayor-elect of Davao City, pending permission from the ICC for his oath-taking.
The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) in the Philippines is seeking permission from the International Criminal Court (ICC) to allow former President Rodrigo Duterte to take his oath of office as mayor of Davao City.

DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla acknowledged Duterte's recent electoral victory, stating that he was proclaimed mayor following the May 12 elections, where he received a substantial mandate from voters.

In his remarks, Secretary Remulla emphasized the need for formal protocol, indicating that a request will be made for an ICC consul to visit Duterte, who is currently detained in The Hague, Netherlands.

The former president must take his oath to assume his mayoral role officially.

Should Duterte be unable to fulfill his duties as mayor due to his ongoing legal situation, plans are in place to have Vice Mayor-elect Sebastian Duterte temporarily assume the mayoral responsibilities of Davao City.

Rodrigo Duterte was arrested and detained by the ICC in March 2023, awaiting hearings related to charges of crimes against humanity connected to alleged extrajudicial killings during his administration's controversial anti-drug campaign.

Despite his detention, Duterte won the support of 662,630 voters, significantly defeating former Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles, who garnered only 80,852 votes.

This election outcome has further underscored the complexities surrounding Duterte's political legacy and the legal challenges he faces.
