Darlene Berberabe Appointed as New Solicitor General of the Philippines

Darlene Berberabe takes over from Menardo Guevarra following a recent cabinet reshuffle.
MANILA, Philippines — Darlene Berberabe was sworn in as the new Solicitor General of the Philippines on Thursday, succeeding Menardo Guevarra, who previously held the role of Justice Secretary under the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

The oath-taking ceremony took place at Malacañang, presided over by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Berberabe, a distinguished lawyer with an extensive background in legal academia, previously served as the dean of the University of the Philippines College of Law.

The Solicitor General’s office functions as the government’s legal representative in various judicial matters.

Menardo Guevarra confirmed his departure from the position ahead of Berberabe's swearing-in, expressing support for her appointment.

"I am happy for Darlene Berberabe.

As a top-caliber lawyer with an impressive management background, she will surely do as well as Solicitor General," Guevarra stated.

He also mentioned his intention to return to private life following his tenure.

In addition to the appointment of Berberabe, President Marcos also welcomed Jose Ramon Aliling as the new Secretary of the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development.

These appointments mark part of the ongoing adjustments within President Marcos's cabinet following the recent midterm elections.

The President previously instructed all appointees to submit courtesy resignations as he seeks to reevaluate his administration's personnel.

In another significant development, Marcos rejected the courtesy resignations of several key officials including the Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla, the Department of Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, and Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro.

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin confirmed the rejections and clarified that there was no update regarding the courtesy resignation of National Security Adviser Eduardo Ano, as it is considered a personal matter between the President and Ano.

The resignation of Commission on Higher Education chairperson Popoy De Vera has been accepted by the President, who sought new beginnings within the agency.

Bersamin noted that the pressures within collegial bodies like CHED could have influenced this decision, though he refrained from providing specific details.

In related news, former Negros Oriental Representative Arnolfo Teves Jr. was recently turned over to the Philippine government by Timor-Leste authorities.

President Marcos emphasized the need for accountability and the rule of law, stating that those who violate the law must face justice.

He expressed gratitude to Timor-Leste's leaders for their cooperation in this matter.

Outgoing Philippine National Police Chief General Rommel Francisco Marbil publicly thanked President Marcos for the opportunity to lead the police force and urged support for his successor, PMGen. Nicolas Torre III.

Marbil noted Torre’s work ethic and strong principles, indicating confidence in his leadership to continue the fight against crime and prioritize community relations and discipline within the police force.

A Change of Command Ceremony and Retirement Honors for Marbil are scheduled for June 2.
