Philippine Midterm Elections Yield Historic Results

Philippine Midterm Elections Yield Historic Results

Jamila Ruma becomes youngest mayor, Leni Robredo wins in Naga, and Rodrigo Duterte returns to Davao City.
In the recent Philippine midterm elections, a series of significant victories were recorded across various regions of the country, showcasing both continuing political legacies and historic firsts.

Jamila Ruma has been elected as the mayor of Rizal, Cagayan, at the age of 21, making her the youngest mayor in the Philippines.

Ruma secured the position following the death of her father, Joel Ruma, who was assassinated in April while campaigning.

Despite being new to the political stage, she won against opponents Ralph Mamauag and Florence Littaua.

Alongside her victory, her mother, Brenda Ruma, was also re-elected as vice mayor, marking a notable familial continuation in local governance.

Ruma expressed her gratitude through her social media account, promising to continue her father’s legacy and maintain the community's safety and happiness.

In Naga City, Leni Robredo, the former Vice President of the Philippines, made history by becoming the first female mayor of the city.

She won the mayoral race with her running mate, former Camarines Sur representative Gabriel Bordado Jr., who was elected vice mayor.

Robredo has indicated her commitment to local governance while continuing to support national issues, with her previous candidacy for the presidency in 2022 continuing to resonate with her base.

Rodrigo Duterte, the former president, returned to local politics with a landslide victory in the mayoral race for Davao City, garnering 662,630 votes.

His closest rival, Karlo Nograles, received 80,426 votes.

Duterte's family maintained a formidable presence in Davao’s political scene, with his son, Baste Duterte, winning the vice mayor position and his other son, Paolo Duterte, elected as the first district representative.

In Lipa, Batangas, Mikee Morada was elected vice mayor, overcoming incumbent mayor Camille Lopez.

Morada expressed appreciation for the trust placed in him by the constituents, committing to serve diligently in his new role.

Actor-politician Angelu De Leon was also successful in her election as councilor in Pasig City, thanking her supporters for their trust.

She noted her intention to enhance service delivery for the Pasigueños during her upcoming term, while Vico Sotto secured re-election as mayor.

Other notable results included Ryan Christian Recto, who followed in the political footsteps of his family and won the congressional seat for Batangas’ 6th District at the age of 29. His mother, Vilma Santos-Recto, also returned to public office as governor after a three-year hiatus.

The recent elections have highlighted the complex interplay of political dynasties and emerging leaders in the Philippines, with a mix of both new entrants and established figures shaping the future of governance throughout the nation.
