PhilHealth informs members about rabies treatment benefits amid a decrease in reported cases of the disease.
The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) has issued a reminder to the public regarding its rabies benefit package, coinciding with reported incidents of animal bites and concerns surrounding rabies.
As of June 6, 2025, PhilHealth confirmed that members and their eligible dependents exposed to rabies through animal bites are entitled to receive an animal bite treatment package worth P5,850.
This comprehensive package includes critical medical treatments such as the rabies
vaccine, rabies immune globulin, local wound care, tetanus toxoid, anti-tetanus serum, antibiotics, and various treatment supplies including syringes, alcohol, and antiseptics.
Individuals in need of these services can access the package at designated Animal Bite Treatment Centers or at health facilities that are accredited by PhilHealth.
According to data from the Department of Health (DOH), there have been 124 reported cases of rabies from January 1 to May 17 this year, reflecting a 32% decline from the 183 cases recorded during the same period in the previous year.
Despite this decrease, the DOH emphasizes the importance of continued awareness and educational efforts regarding rabies prevention and treatment, given the disease's 100% case fatality rate.
Rabies is a significant public health concern in the Philippines, occurring year-round, prompting health authorities to recommend that pet owners ensure their cats and dogs are vaccinated against the rabies virus.
Under the Rabies Control Act, local government units are providing free anti-rabies vaccinations for pets to help mitigate the risk of transmission.'
