In a tragic accident on the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), a collision involving five vehicles resulted in the death of 12 individuals and injuries to 28 others.

The incident occurred around 12:30 PM on [insert date] at the SCTEX toll plaza, situated at the boundary between Concepcion, Tarlac, and Mabalacat City, Pampanga.

According to officials from the Tarlac Provincial Police Office, Lt. Col. Romel Santos reported that the vehicles involved included a Toyota Veloz, an 18-wheeler truck, a Nissan Urvan, a Kia Sonet, and a Solid North Transit bus.

The bus, driven by Teodoro Merjan from Malawa, Lingayen, Pangasinan, collided with the Toyota Veloz, driven by Carlo Mojica of San Fernando, Pampanga, who was stationary in a queue at the toll plaza.

Initial investigations suggest that Merjan fell asleep at the wheel, leading to the crash.

Following the collision, the bus struck two other vehicles ahead of it, causing severe damage and trapping occupants inside.

The impact was reported by NLEX Traffic Operations Vice President Robin Ignacio to be significant, with the bus traveling at speeds between 180 to 200 kilometers per hour before the crash.

Emergency response teams, including the Philippine Red Cross, dispatched ambulances to the scene to assist with the casualties.

Unfortunately, many of the victims were pronounced dead on arrival at Tarlac Provincial Hospital, while others were treated for injuries.

The recovery of those trapped in the wreckage has posed difficulties for rescue crews, as they continue their efforts to retrieve victims from the damaged vehicles.

Eyewitnesses and local residents have noted that visibility may have been affected by smoke from burning grasses near the highway, contributing to the accident's severity.
