Significant Fire Destroys 200 Homes in Bacoor, Cavite

A large fire in Bacoor City leads to extensive damage and numerous evacuations.
CAVITE, Philippines — A devastating fire broke out late at night on October 1, 2023, in a compound located in Barangay Talaba 3, Bacoor City, resulting in the destruction of approximately 200 homes.

According to the local Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the fire ignited at around 10:40 PM in the Paraiso Compound, Zone 6. The first alarm was declared shortly afterward, at 10:51 PM.

Due to strong winds, the fire spread rapidly, prompting the issuance of a second alarm by 11:01 PM. Firefighting operations continued for more than three hours before the flames were finally extinguished.

Investigating officials from the BFP are currently working to ascertain the cause of the fire and assess the financial impact of the damage caused.

Meanwhile, in Zamboanga City, approximately 400 families were evacuated due to severe flooding caused by heavy rains linked to the southwest monsoon (habagat) and a low-pressure area (LPA) on October 1, 2023. Reports from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) indicate that 383 families consisting of 1,186 individuals were forced from their homes as floodwaters inundated their communities.

The flooding resulted from excessive rainfall that caused local rivers to overflow.

Evacuation measures included relocating families to makeshift shelters in local Barangays and Multi-Purpose Covered Courts.

Key roads in the city were also affected by rising waters, while water levels at Pasonanca Dam reached 76 meters around 12:25 PM.

City Mayor John Dalipe ordered immediate deployment of rescue and social services teams to assist affected families.

Relief goods were distributed to those in evacuation centers.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued warnings for heavy rainfall, reminding the public to stay alert as further rain was expected across parts of Luzon and the Visayas.

The LPA was reported to be moving in a northwest direction, potentially impacting northern and central Luzon.

Authorities noted that moderate to heavy rains, ranging between 50 to 100 millimeters, were forecast across several regions, particularly in Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, and Albay.

PAGASA also raised warnings for potential flooding and landslides, urging residents in vulnerable areas to take precautions.

National disaster response agencies have prepared for the LPA's impact, with the Philippine Coast Guard mobilizing its response units to assist communities at risk.
