Philippines Enhances Military Capabilities with Acquisition of 12 FA-50 Combat Jets from South Korea

The Philippines confirms a multi-million dollar deal for advanced air defense assets as part of its military modernization program.
The Department of National Defense (DND) of the Philippines has announced the acquisition of 12 additional FA-50 fighter jets from South Korea, reaffirming its commitment to enhancing the capabilities of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

The contract, valued at approximately $700 million, was confirmed by DND spokesman Arsenio Andolong, with deliveries scheduled to occur in phases over the next five years, aiming for completion by 2030.

The newly contracted aircraft, identified as FA-50 Block 70 light combat fighter jets, are being manufactured by Korea Aerospace Industries Ltd. (KAI).

This version of the FA-50 platform is said to incorporate advanced avionics, modern radar systems, and an extended operational range, signifying a considerable upgrade to the Philippines' air defense capabilities.

Andolong emphasized that this acquisition aligns with the DND’s Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept, which seeks to fortify the defense posture of the archipelago.

This procurement marks an important step in the ongoing modernization efforts of the AFP. The Philippines currently operates 11 FA-50 aircraft, which were originally acquired under a contract signed in March 2014 worth P18.9 billion.

These fighter jets have been utilized in various operations, including their deployment during the 2017 siege in Marawi.

While the addition of the new aircraft will enhance the overall fleet, it is noted that one of the previously acquired FA-50s was lost in a crash during a tactical nighttime operation in Bukidnon in March 2023, resulting in the deaths of two pilots.

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) attributed this incident to a combination of factors, including the complexities involved in night flying in mountainous terrains and the challenges of multi-aircraft operations.

A Notice to Proceed was issued earlier in the month, formalizing the contract which includes not only the aircraft but also mission equipment, integrated logistics support, and a training and logistics information system.

The acquisition is expected to bolster defense cooperation between the Philippines and South Korea, reflecting a shared interest in regional security and military readiness.
