Philippine Advocacy Group Calls for Enhanced Collaboration in Education to Meet Workforce Demands

PBEd emphasizes the need for inter-agency cooperation to align education with the evolving labor market requirements in the Philippines.
The Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) has advocated for stronger coordination among government agencies to ensure that the country's education system is aligned with the current and future needs of the labor market.

Executive Director Hanibal Camua highlighted the importance of a cohesive strategy to prepare students for in-demand careers, stating that collaborative efforts can transform the education system into one that genuinely empowers learners.

This renewed call for inter-agency collaboration coincides with ongoing education reforms in the Philippines, which include proposals to update the senior high school curriculum, promote inclusive education, and encourage greater cooperation among educational institutions.

PBEd has emphasized the need for long-term structural reforms, notably a potential merger between the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

This integration is seen as a way to enhance governance across post-secondary education and training, facilitating smoother transitions for learners from basic education to various academic and career pathways.

The initiatives proposed by PBEd align closely with President Marcos' workforce development agenda.

Camua noted that recent steps taken by the Department of Education (DepEd), CHED, and TESDA have aimed at equipping students with practical skills while ensuring equity and inclusion.

The advocacy group underscored the potential benefits of merging CHED and TESDA, suggesting that it could maximize resources, reduce redundancies, and ultimately improve educational outcomes for Filipino students.

In light of the ongoing public consultations regarding curriculum reform and workforce strategies, PBEd has called on industry leaders, policymakers, and civil society groups to actively engage in these discussions to shape an education system responsive to labor market needs.

Moreover, PBEd highlighted the importance of seamless transitions from education to employment, especially as an increasing number of senior high school graduates enter the workforce each year.

The organization stressed the necessity of a cohesive framework that connects basic education, higher education, and skills training institutions.

An integrated approach is seen as essential for maintaining a relevant and inclusive education system.

Previously, DepEd and TESDA announced an enhanced partnership aimed at refining technical-vocational education and training programs within the senior high school curriculum.

This collaboration seeks to improve accessibility, relevance, and efficiency, preparing students for various career pathways.

The focus is on integrating work immersion and competency-based training to equip students with the practical skills and experiences necessary for immediate employment or further specialization.

By aligning basic education with technical skills development, these agencies aim to bridge the gap between classroom instruction and workforce preparedness, ensuring that students graduate with the competencies required for employment or advanced training.

PBEd expressed optimism that the introduced reforms would yield positive outcomes, contingent upon sustained commitment, stakeholder engagement, and the willingness to implement necessary changes.
