Meralco Advances to PBA Quarterfinals with Victory Over Ginebra

Meralco secures quarterfinal spot in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup after a decisive win against Barangay Ginebra.
Meralco Bolts achieved a notable victory against Barangay Ginebra, defeating them 82-73 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on May 30, 2023. This win secured Meralco a position in the quarterfinals of the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup.

The Bolts' defensive strategy proved crucial in the final minutes of the game, as they held Ginebra to no field goals during the last four minutes of play.

The contest was tightly contested, reaching a 71-71 tie before Meralco executed a decisive 9-2 run to clinch the victory.

Throughout the critical final moments, defensive stops hindered Ginebra’s ability to score, with their only points coming from two free throws by Jamie Malonzo in the final 38 seconds.

Meralco’s players contributed significantly, with Chris Newsome leading the team with 15 points, complemented by six rebounds, two blocks, and a steal.

Chris Banchero added 14 points, while Cliff Hodge recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Both Bong Quinto and CJ Cansino contributed 10 points each to the team's total.

Meralco finished the elimination rounds with a record of 6-5, enhancing their chances for a deeper run in the tournament.

Conversely, Ginebra faced challenges, ending the game without head coach Tim Cone, who was ejected after receiving two technical fouls during Meralco's closing stretch.

Scottie Thompson and Jamie Malonzo led Ginebra’s scoring efforts, each contributing 16 points to their team’s tally.

This match marks a significant moment for Meralco as they look to build on this momentum heading into the quarterfinals.
