Impeachment Proceedings Against Vice President Sara Duterte Gain Support from Mindanao Lawmakers

Majority of Mindanao congressmen backing impeachment won recent elections, while the Senate is set to handle the trial.
MANILA, Philippines — A significant majority of House representatives from Mindanao who have signed the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte emerged victorious in recent elections, according to House Assistant Majority Leader and Tingog party-list Representative Jude Acidre.

Of the 115 district representatives who supported the impeachment, 100 were re-elected, reflecting a success rate of 86.96%.

Among the 44 Mindanao congressmen who backed the impeachment and ran for re-election, 36 won, equating to 81.81%.

Acidre emphasized that these election results signify a public demand for accountability and truth-telling.

He noted, “What we’re seeing is a public that values courage over complicity.

The people have drawn the line—and they stood with us.”

Earlier, Toby Tiangco, campaign manager for Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas and Navotas City Representative, attributed the defeats faced by many administration senatorial candidates to the impeachment complaint.

Further reinforcing the significance of the newly elected officials' support for the impeachment, Acidre described it as evidence of confidence in the leadership of Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez.

He urged fellow congressmen to move beyond blame and prioritize addressing the pressing needs of the public under the New Philippines agenda.

In related developments, Malacañang has clarified that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will not interfere in the impending impeachment trial in the Senate.

Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty.

Claire Castro stated that the matter rests solely with the Senate, and the President's position remains unchanged, emphasizing that he will not intervene regardless of who occupies the congressional seats.

Castro reiterated the necessity for senators to fulfill their obligations not just for an individual but for the benefit of the populace.

The President's stance has remained consistent since before the midterm elections, reinforcing the rule of law and proper accountability.

In another notable development, incoming Mamamayang Liberal party-list Representative Leila de Lima has expressed her willingness to pursue her drug cases up to the Supreme Court.

This follows a decision from the Court of Appeals to revert her cases back to the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court.

De Lima maintains that the acquittal she received was final and unappealable due to double jeopardy principles, although she is prepared to escalate the matter if necessary.

On a different front, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced potential collaboration with Interpol to apprehend former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, who faces qualified human trafficking charges associated with illegal gaming operations in Pampanga.

DOJ spokesperson Jose Dominic Clavano IV confirmed that diplomatic channels might include engaging Interpol, given Roque's current location abroad while the arrest warrant remains active.

Additional arrests have been ordered for twenty other individuals involved in the operations of Lucky South 99, a Philippine offshore gaming operator that has faced serious accusations including forced labor and abuse.

Roque has maintained his innocence, claiming his actions do not constitute human trafficking and describing the accusations as politically motivated.

Tracking teams have been deployed nationwide to locate and arrest those named in the warrants.

The situation reflects broader discussions among lawmakers regarding the accountability of individuals linked to organized crime connected to POGO operations.
