Federal ruling demands the return of 2,000 National Guard members deployed in response to immigration raids.
A federal court has ordered President
Donald Trump to relinquish control of approximately 2,000 National Guard members stationed in Los Angeles back to California Governor Gavin Newsom.
This ruling was issued by U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer, who stated, "His actions were illegal.
He must therefore return control of the California National Guard to the Governor of the State of California forthwith."
The National Guard personnel were deployed in response to a series of immigration raids that occurred last week, which sparked protests across California.
Governor Newsom condemned the deployment, asserting that it exacerbated tensions rather than alleviating them.
"He is not a monarch, he is not a king, and he should stop acting like one," Newsom emphasized, expressing frustration with Trump’s unilateral decision-making.
Prior to the court's ruling, President Trump had criticized California's leadership, labeling the state’s governor and mayor as ineffective.
His administration characterized the deployment of National Guard troops as necessary for maintaining order during the immigration enforcement operations.
The decision of the court now mandates a prompt reversal of this deployment, aligning with constitutional protocols regarding the authority of state governors over their National Guard units.
