Technical decision loss for Charly Suarez overturned with WBO mandating a rematch after new evidence emerges.
Charly Suarez's technical decision loss to Emanuel Navarrete has been officially overturned to a no contest by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC).
This decision follows the World Boxing Organization's (WBO) directive for an immediate rematch between the two fighters.
In their WBO junior lightweight championship bout, Navarrete was initially declared the winner after leading the scorecards at the time of the stoppage.
The ringside physician assessed Navarrete's condition and deemed him unable to continue due to a significant cut above his left eyebrow, which was bleeding extensively.
Referee Edward Collantes ruled that the cut resulted from an accidental clash of heads.
Although CSAC replay official Jack Reis reviewed the incident, there was insufficient evidence to conclude that Suarez had inflicted the cut with a punch.
Consequently, the judges scored the fight 78-75, 77-76, and 77-76 in favor of Navarrete, allowing him to retain his title.
Following the bout, new footage emerged, revealing that a counter left punch thrown by Suarez appeared to deepen the cut on Navarrete, potentially warranting a technical knockout in Suarez's favor.
This new evidence played a significant role in prompting CSAC to conduct a vote on June 3, according to Manila time, which ultimately resulted in the ruling being changed to a no contest.
Suarez's camp expressed relief at the overturning of the decision, although they had hoped for the outcome to reflect a technical knockout victory.
Suarez issued a statement on his official
Facebook account, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to appeal the initial ruling and respecting the decision made by the commission.
The camp of Navarrete has yet to respond publicly to the decision.
In the immediate aftermath of the controversial bout, Navarrete had shown hesitance regarding a rematch.
